Meet Dr. Gaby Aranda!

Alyse was lucky enough to have a Q&A with Dr. Gaby and get to know her better!

Alyse: Where did you learn to speak Spanish?
Dr. Gaby: My parents are from Mexico and so I grew up speaking both Spanish and English

Alyse: Where did you grow up?
Dr. Gaby: Oakland, CA

Alyse: What made you want to become an Orthodontist?

Dr. Gaby: “That’s a tough one, there’s so many reasons, but frankly I love working with kids. I wanted to make their lives better somehow”

Cats or Dogs?

Dr. Gaby: Dogs523725613_dog_cat_xlarge

Alyse: Do you have a dog?

Dr. Gaby: {laughter} No my kids would love to have one. They ask for one every year, so  if I ever had a pet, it would be a dog!

Alyse: If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Dr. Gaby: “I think I’d want to be fearless, because I think fear is a limiting factor for all of us. We’re afraid to do a lot of things and that’s why we don’t reach all of  our goals. Also physical duplication would be cool  because sometimes I need to be at two places at one time”

Alyse: Have you ever been skydiving or bungee jumping?

Dr. Gaby: I’m  pretty lame, I don’t do a lot of those kinds of sports. I love playing kickball, and actually just a year ago I was on a kick ball team. I have tried tennis and love it, but I’m terrible at it. I tried surfing and love it, I’m terrible at it.  I’m into running and hiking so the North West suits me very well.

Alyse: What brought you to Oregon, schooling and then you fell in love with the place?

Dr. Gaby: Yes! I was accepted to OHSU for my Orthodontic  specialty training  and then we just couldn’t imagine raising our kids anywhere else.

Alyse: How did you meet your husband?

Dr. Gaby: Kind of a corny story,  I was waitress at a restaurant, he and his friends would come to the restaurant every week after playing basketball and that’s how we met.

Alyse: That’s adorable, how long have you two been married?

Dr. Gaby: We will be celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary this August. We have 3 girls, one soon to be 14, 11, and 7.

Alyse: Where would we find you on a Saturday night?

Dr. Gaby: Believe it or not we have a lot of dance offs at my house. The girls just love to perform, so we do a lot of dance offs and vocal performances

Alyse: Who is usually the winner?

Dr. Gaby: The middle one. By far. She’s the most coordinated. 🙂

Alyse: It’s karaoke night, which category would you most likely choose a song from

Ladies of the 80’s or 90’s boy bands?madonna-vogue

Dr. Gaby: Definitely Ladies of the 80’s. Madonna was my favorite.

Alyse: Alright your birthday is this week, if you were given a million dollars, what would you spend it on?

Dr. Gaby: I’d get a new car, my Prius is on it’s last leg, I’ve put a lot of miles on it. Then with the rest of the money I’d pay off my sisters’ house.

Alyse: Favorite animal?

Dr. Gaby: The Lion King is my favorite animated film so I love lions

Alyse: Do you have any  family traditions?

Dr. Gaby: We are starting a new  tradition this year, we are going to a family camp in California.  We are also involved doing things for the epilepsy foundation, my middle child has epilepsy, so we do camps for her, and other benefits. We also love to travel to California to visit my parents, I have 5 sisters and 2 bothers and out of 8 kids my mom has 16 grand children, so we all get together a couple times a year.
