Get to know Dr. Eric Jacobsen!

Meet Dr. Eric Jacobsen from Jacobsen Pediatric Dentistry

Alyse sat down with Dr. J to get to know him better and therefore help you do the same!

Q: What made you want to become a dentist, and more specifically a pediatric dentist?
A: My older brother went to dental school and was happy with his decision. I always enjoyed going to my dentist as a kid in Astoria. I like working with and meeting new people. While going to school I quickly learned that I enjoyed working with children and decided I wanted to do it full time.

Q: Where did you go to school?

A: Undergrad at BYU, University of Maryland in Baltimore for dental school and then I completed a pediatric dentistry residency at Albert Einstein’s College of Medicine / Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.

Q: How did you meet your wife?
A: We met when I was in the 1st grade and she was in kindergarten.  I was a pretty big deal on the playground, pretty awesome at kickball. I also had a box of 64 crayons.  She liked me in grade school, but I wanted to focus on academics.  I actually didn’t like her because she was faster than all the boys. We started dating in high school. We will be married for 15 years in June.

 Q: Kids?

A: 3 kids; 2 girls and a boy. The girls were born in Baltimore in dental school, and then we added our boy in the Bronx.

Q: If your family was “The Incredibles” which super power would you want?

A: I’m obviously already super strong, so I don’t need to be Mr. Incredible.  Dash is crazy fast.  I guess I would go with Dash, it would help with the commute and would be super fun.

Q: Favorite Disney movie?
A: Does Pixar count? (Yes) Toy Story, Toy story is a great one.  I may have teared up a little in Toy Story 3.

Q: Favorite Movie Villian?
A: Gru from “Despicable Me”, he’s pretty likable.

Q: Roller Skates or Roller Blades
A:I roller-skated a lot when I was a kid at the roller skating rink in Astoria.  I used to roller blade with my wife when we were first married. Until one day, we were in Provo and I was roller blading in front of a car wash, I didn’t see a curb and totally bailed. It was a nice day, there were tons of people out, and they all laughed at me (even my wife).  I haven’t been roller blading since. They are still in the garage if anyone wants a pair of used roller blades.

Q: Do you play sports?
A: I like basketball a lot. (Are you a big Blazers fan?) YEAH, I love the Blazersimgres!  I go to games whenever I can.  I used to run a fair amount and have completed 3 marathons.

Q: Chocolate or Vanilla

A: Well, are we talking ice cream? Vanilla, but I love chocolate too. I’ve been to Salt & Straw 3 times this month!

Q: Guilty Pleasures?
A: Food.  If it weren’t for my wife, I’d probably eat like a 4 year old.  I like SpaghettiO’s with meatballs, pizza, nachos, and Squirt.  I’m lucky my wife is a great cook or I’d be in trouble.

Q: What sets you apart from other pediatric dentists?

A: I think we’re all trying to do the same thing.  We try to create a safe environment where kids can be kids and learn to love coming to the dentist.  Sometimes the parents need just as much reassurance as the patients. Harmony Orthodontics and I share the same vision which is we want to provide great care for great people. A place where people can come and be a part of our lives and we can enjoy watching them grow up. They’re excited to see us and we’re excited to see them and develop those relationships. The actual act of dentistry is fine and I enjoy it, but the true enjoyment comes from building the relationships and trust with the parents and the patients.

Fun Fact: Our iTunes keeps track of how many times we’ve watched movies, and we’ve watched FROZEN over 180 times, “I think it might be a record for a male in his mid 30’s.  I may need counseling”.
